About us

As founder and President of the Bajan Land Based Game Fishing Club I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to you.

For years I have toyed with the idea of forming such a club and now it has finally happened.  This Club was officially launched on 01 Jan 2011. Please take a look at the clubs logo which appears at the top left. You will notice that the above logo shows a picture of a 'Jack Crevalle' or as it is commonly called in Barbados 'Horse eye Cavalley' as the center piece and is surrounded by the club's name and immediately below the fish is the Barbados National Flag. The Jack Crevalle fish is perhaps one of the most common game fishes caught in the surf and hence the symbol of the club.

This logo symbolises the pride of the club.

The club's name is reflective of the commitment and passion for fishing of its members.

Ultimate Challenge

For many anglers Land Base Game represents the ultimate challenge in fishing. It is especially challenging to say the least when fishing on cliffs or rocks where flat surfaces are very limited and are often prone to prevailing swells and have the smallest of areas for landing that prized catch. Indeed, just finding that suitable area for getting a gaff shot often proves to be very difficult.

Coastal Fishing

The club conducts its fishing at various places throughout the coastal regions of Barbados. The club ventures on several jetties, surf or sand beaches and the ever popular rocks and cliffs around Barbados.

Fishing Equipment

The preferred fishing reel used by the club is a Baitrunner reel. Now this type of reel has an advantage over other reels because it affords the angler to set the hook or strike the fish that much quicker. Lets be clear here the normal traditional reel would only allow the angler to strike or set the hook after the drag setting is tightened whereas the baitrunner allows this action with a simple crank of the handle or a quick flick of the baitrunner lever located at the rear of the reel.

Surf rods ranging from 10-15 ft are popular with club members. With regard to specific equipment brands the club leaves the selection entirely at the discretion of members. It should be noted that some members are comfortable using casting rods in the 7-9 ft range.

Contrary to popular belief the club is not limited to using monofilament line. The club recognises the use of the following lines:

  • Monofilament
  • Braid
  • Dacron
Once again the club leaves the selection of lines at the discretion of its members.

Finally, hand reels are permitted though its use is somewhat limited and has its challenges. Can you imagine fighting a large fish on the rocks at night and the fish turns and comes your way you would have to make very fast retrievals the line now resting at your feet and not to mention the rocks is indeed prone to tangles. But wait a minute here is the best part - the fish suddenly turns and is now heading back out to sea so, what do you do, of course let the line go freely through your hand all the while hoping that there is no tangles either in the line itself or among the rocks. The scenario given is based on a person fishing alone however, the outcome would be quite different if a second person is there to lend a hand. The discretion on using hand lines rests entirely with the angler.

Goals of the club:

(1) To foster comradeship amongst its members

(2) To conduct fishing competitions

(3) To explore new fishing sites and boldly catch fish where no one has caught fish before

(4) To encourage the development and usage of new fishing techniques amongst club members
