David has reinvented the wheel so to speak. In viewing literally hundreds of fishing videos, somewhere along the line he repeatedly saw a cliff gaff that was used in Australia to bring large fish up a cliff face. He saw the risk taken in doing this type of procedure as two fold- (1) You have to be at the cliffs edge to grab a hold of the fishing line thus putting your life in danger and (2) the fish is even more prone to be lost while the angler is fiddling trying to attach the gaff since the line may come in contact with the cliff or the fish rushes into the rocks either way the line can rub against the rock and in David's experience 'rock wins every time'. The style gaff being used by the Australians carries two rings evenly spaced along the shaft in order to allow the gaff to slide down.
David in his endless fishing wisdom saw the need to create a gaff that alleviates those risks mentioned earlier and has come up with his own creation. Take a look at the below picture noting the obvious oversized rings, designed to allow the angler to keep his rod further over the cliff. David explains further, the gaffer only has to secure the gaff to the rod by placing the rings over the rod and line and then tilting the rod slightly downward this allows the gaff to slide gently forward over the rod and straight to the fish. This as David puts it eliminates the risk to both the gaffer and potential line breakage from rubbing on the rocks as is the case with the Australian style method. David calls it the 'DC Rod Gaff'.
Materials needed are as follows:-
- One @ 1'' round by 2 feet long piece of wood (broom handle works perfect)
- One large gaff hook
- One stainless steel circle clamp
- One foot of 1/4 inch plastic tubing
- One wire hanger
- Length of rope to be determined by angler
The Club recognises the genius approach taken by David and commends him. He has taken us literally to the next level in landing the 'Big Boys'. You are definitely hooked on fishing. The song says it all, well done and congrats.
